05.02.2025, Zurich - In January 2025, company formations in Switzerland and Liechtenstein fell significantly. While 4,260 new companies were registered in Switzerland (-15% compared to the previous month), the number in Liechtenstein fell to 60 (-50%). At the same time, Liechtenstein recorded a sharp increase in mutations (+216%), while company deletions (-5%) and liquidations (-22%) declined in Switzerland.
New registrations
In January 2025, a total of 4,260 new companies were founded in Switzerland. This corresponds to a decrease of 15% compared to the previous month. There was also a slight decrease of 0.4% compared to the previous year, with 4,276 new companies being registered in January 2024.
In the long term, however, the trend remains positive: over the past five years, the number of company formations has increased continuously. In January 2020, 3,711 new companies were registered - an increase of 15% compared to the current level.
Deletions
In January 2025, 2,677 company deletions were registered in Switzerland. This corresponds to a decrease of 14% compared to the previous month. There is also a decrease compared to the previous year: the number of deletions was 5% lower than in January 2024.
Mutations
The number of company mutations was 17,440 in January 2025, which corresponds to a decrease of 13% compared to the previous month. Similar to the number of new company formations and company deletions, the numbers here have also fallen compared to 2024 - specifically by 3%.
There is also a significant decrease in company liquidations: in January 2025, 1,848 companies opted for this measure, which corresponds to a sharp decrease of 22% compared to the previous month.
Principality of Liechtenstein
The Principality of Liechtenstein is starting 2025 with the usual economic challenges. The number of new companies founded has fallen significantly: in January, only 60 new companies were registered, which corresponds to a decrease of 50% compared to the previous month.
What is striking, however, is the sharp increase in mutations, which, with 1,694 changes recorded, are 216% higher than the previous month.
