June 2024: Slight increase in company formations and high number of company deletions in the Swiss commercial register

New registrations
At the end of the second quarter of 2024, there was a slight increase in new company formations. A total of 4,600 new companies were registered, which corresponds to an increase of 3 % compared to the previous month, but is 7 % less than in the previous year. This is the second-highest number of new start-ups in the last six months. The rising number of new start-ups reflects the activity of the Swiss economy. However, this positive result is somewhat dampened by the high number of cancellations.

Deletions
3,043 company deletions were recorded in June 2024. Compared to the previous month, the number of deletions rose by a significant 19 %. A look at previous years shows that the figures tend to rise in June. On a positive note, however, fewer companies were deleted in June 2024 than in June 2023.

Mutations
The number of company mutations has also risen only slightly, similar to the number of newly founded companies. In June 2024, 17,378 company mutations were reported, which corresponds to an increase of 4 % compared to the previous month, but is 4 % less than in the previous year.

Company liquidations fell by 1 %, with 1,677 companies ceasing their business activities and deciding to liquidate.

Principality of Liechtenstein
Liechtenstein recorded an increase in company formations in June 2024. With 58 new company registrations, the number was 12% higher than the previous month. The number of deletions also rose significantly, with 50 registered deletions in June. The number of changes also increased. A total of 819 changes were reported, which corresponds to an increase of 20 % compared to the previous month. The data from the Principality of Liechtenstein has been evaluated up to 27 June 2024.
